Cosmetics are becoming a highly technical business today. The term "cosmeceuticals" is coined for the incredible growth of these cosmetic products. The business has been revolutionized and enhanced the craving demand for chemicals like alpha hydroxy, hyaluronic and amino acids, and proteins such as  collagen. The major parts of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum.
Phthalates are used in cosmetics like hair sprays, perfume, nail polishes etc. Parabens are used in toiletries such as moisturizers as preservatives. Triclosan contains antibacterial components, often used in deodrants, toothpastes, liquid soaps, and mouthwashes. Toluene and Xylene is used in lacquers and nail polishes, PPD is a dyestuff used for hair dyes, BHT is an antioxidant preservative used for lipsticks, sun lotions, face creams and mascara. Propylene glycol is used in shampoo, sun and body lotions, makeup/colour cosmetics etc. Alpha Hydroxy Acid is used in anti-aging and facial product bath and shower products.
