Copper is the most noble of the metals in common use. This metal has excellent corrosion resistance features in atmosphere and in fresh water. In sea water, the copper-nickel alloys have superior resistance to corrosion coupled with anti-fouling properties. Thus, the copper plates, copper alloys are widely used in cladding applications, piping in pipeline applications, tubes, tube plates and outer shells of condensers and heat exchangers, desalination plants, and distillation plants etc. The copper sheets are used to protect the bottoms of wooden-hulled ships/vessels since years. Copper alloys are used for tubes, tube plates of heat exchangers for resistance to erosion, and impingement attack in flowing sea water, resistance to pitting in static sea water, resistance to stress corrosion, and for reasonable strength and ductility. In multistage distillation plants these plates are used to recover a significant proportion of the latent heat evaporation process.
