It has hardness of 5 - 5.5 Mohs. It is formed of a rock composed mainly of the mineral lazurite with variable amounts of pyrite (brassy flecks) and white calcite and its specific gravity is 2.7 - 2.9.
Lapis is a gemstone i.e. deepest blue with golden shining Pyrite inclusions, which twin kle like little stars. It was one of the first stones ever to be used and worn for jewellery. It is available in deep blue, azure blue, greenish blue (bluish color with flecks of white and gold).
