From centuries flowers are symbol of beauty and love essentially grown for aesthetic, social function. Besides, they have the extraction of essential oil and manufacturing of perfumes. India is the only country gifted with suitable climate to grow spectrum flowers. Indian floriculture industry is wi tnessing an unprecedented growth and increasing acceptability today. The consumption of ornamental and flowering plants is generally by the affluent class of the society. Higher standards of living and growing desire to live in an environment friendly atmosphere have led to an increasing demand for floriculture in India. Cut flowers dominate the floriculture industry. They range from traditional flowers, such as marigold, jasmine, chrysanthemum, china aster, crossandra and tuberose, the rest being under contemporary flowers such as rose, gladiolus, carnation, tuberose and orchids used in bouquets and arrangements. Dried flowers contribute a major share to the floriculture trade. Dahlias, marigolds, jute flowers, wood roses, wild lilies, helichrysum, lotus pods etc. can be easily processed and preserved as dried flowers. The dried flowers have enormous potential due to their non-perishable nature. The dry flower units are located mainly in Tuticorin and Calcutta. Bedding plants is an essential part of floriculture trade that has much in demand to supply seedlings and rooted cuttings flower like chrysanthemum, carnation, gerbera, dahlia, poinsettia, marigold and others. Flower seeds and bulbs contribute a lot to floriculture industry. The major crops for seeds include anthurium, aster, calendula, dianthus, marigold, pansy, phlox, salvia, stock, sweet peas, zinnia etc. The major bulb production crops include gladioli, tuberose and all kinds of lilium. The major production centers for flower seeds and bulbs are Srinagar, Ludhiana, Bangalore and Kalimpong. A spectrum of flowers, dried flowers and floriculture commodities is supplied by host of traders and suppliers.
