Carousel is a technology used to store items for eventual picking or retrieval. There are two main types of carousel systems operated for wide industrial applications. The vertical carousels are a general class of storage machine that utilize chain and track/linkage that rotate box structure shelvin g modules in a vertical plane. They resembles a Ferris wheel in dynamics, the individual shelving modules are kept horizontal on their path around the vertical track with use of a paternoster mechanism. They are suited for consolidating the storage of like sized small parts in a small footprint, as the technology is somewhat expensive on a purely volumetric basis. Horizontal carousels are typically grouped in two to four machines with a single operator. The horizontal carousels are serviced in a round robin fashion allowing the machines to preposition to their next location while other horizontal carousels are being picked. A wide range of carousel storage systems is manufactured by a host of manufacturers.
