Thermal batteries provide relatively high energy density, thus are used for defence and military applications. They are widely used for missiles, projectiles, rockets, torpedoes etc. They provide very long shelf life, fast activation, high peak power density, high reliability etc. These batteries are crafted with high-temperature battery technology that uses the lithium, lithium halide, and iron sulphide system. They are made from powdered solid electrode and electrolyte materials. They are activated by thermal energy supplied by a pyroheater. An electric pulse initiates the heat. These are designed to meet requirements of defence, ideal for applications in missiles, rockets, bombs, mines, decoys, jammers, sonobuoys, smart ammunitions, torpedoes, emergency starting power for military vehicles and aircraft. Thermal batteries are operated under high temperatures like 400-600 for current systems. They are particularly useful for supplying short-term power in expendable weapons e.g., torpedoes and projectiles and exploratory spacecraft.
A wide range of thermal batteries is manufactured by a host of manufacturers.
